Bolivian Wrestler posters
2006, Student work
**Won the Renee Van DeWater Memorial Award**
These are two of my favorite pieces from my undergraduate work at Skidmore College. Originally for an assignment to make an event poster in my Communication Design II class, I took it furhter, making a pair of posters. The inspiration came from a New York Times article I read about Bolivian Women Wrestlers, but I was having trouble creating a drawing I liked of the women, so I tried to draw the male wrestlers in order to loosen up, and found those drawings came out much better. So I rolled with it. But I still want to make some posters for the women someday.. they’re just too cool.
These posters were exhibited in the Schick Art Gallery’s annual Student Exhibition, which that year was curated by an artist I have a great deal of respect for, Fred Wilson, who was in the midst of a residency at Skidmore. Mr. Wilson actually started as a designer, so to know that he picked my designs and gave them an award was pretty awesome. The wrestling posters were exhibited along with another piece of mine, “Personal Patchwork”, which can be found in the Illustration section.
These were also included in my Senior Thesis Exhibition along with some narrative drawings and a comic poster.
